On Saturday, April 18, 2015, Lake Clarke Shores participated in the Great American Cleanup. Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful, Inc., provided the t-shirts, garbage bags, and grabbers, while Waste Management provided the dumpsters and Charles Schwab & Co., Inc., provided the bottled water for the event. In addition, copies of “The Charles Schwab Guide to Finances after Fifty”, written by Charles Schwab and Carrie Schwab Pomerantz, were donated for the first twenty (20) volunteers that completed all three of the applications that were required for the event.

The weather was beautiful Saturday morning as volunteers began showing up as early as 7:00 AM to help with set up and registration. The volunteers continued to arrive by boat, car and on foot to help clean up the Town waterways.  This year 12 boats, including a jet ski, paddle boat, and pontoon, participated in the event.  Several volunteers also walked along the shorelines to remove trash.  There were 55 volunteers that participated in the event including Council Members and staff.  The volunteers filled one of the dumpsters provided by Waste Management with 1.31 tons of debris.

In addition to the 74 large black garbage bags containing trash, aluminum cans and plastic bottles, items collected this year included: assorted flower pots and planters; milk crates; wood and styrofoam pieces; 4 tires; a large stuffed animal; a plastic kiddie pool; one large wooden sign; a BMX bike; an Adirondack chair; 2 television sets; miscellaneous balls; fire extinguishers; and several propane tanks.

After the cleanup everyone enjoyed the hamburgers and pulled pork provided by Mayor Robert Shalhoub and his son Paul, with the assistance of Jimmy Kastrinos, Graham Schmidt and Al and Gloria Raya.

Gift certificates and a collectable truck were provided by Waste Management as prizes for the person or group that collected the most trash, the most unusual item, and the largest item. Thanks to the number of gift certificates donated by Waste Management, we added another category to the list. The prizes were given to:

  •  Most Trash – Ken Phillips & crew
  •  Unusual Item – Doran Family – alien head (uniquely decorated wig stand)
  •  Largest Item – William Murphy – large wooden sign
  •  Item found in usable condition – Doug Sykes & crew (BMX bike)

We would like to thank everyone who helped make our waterways cleaner.  You can check out the photos from the waterway cleanup here!

Our next clean up event will be held in September. Additional information on this event will be posted during the summer.
